What can you get with 6 euro in Shanghai? One week grocery!!

December 20th, 2009 · 4 Comments

In Shanghai as foreigner, you can choose to have two life styles. One is to live western style so which I call ‘expat’ life the other is chinese local life. :)

Last Friday, we went to Carrefour for grocery shopping but found vegetables and other food grocery are pretty expensive. So we decided give Chinese local market the next day.

Saturday morning, we visit Chinese market place near by the house. The price was surprisingly cheap. Until now I knew Chinese will always raise price for foreigner, but in this place I didn’t think they were doing it. Plus even if they did, the price was so cheap that I didn’t really mind.

I bought: (picture below)

  •  Full bag of Rice: 20RMB (2.04 EUR) (I could not measure in kg, since I don’t have weight scale at home)
  • Bag of Mushrooms: 8 RMB (0.81 EUR)
  • 2 Sweet potato: 3.7RMB (0.38 EUR)
  • 12 Eggs: 12.5RMB (1.27 EUR)
  • Carrot, tomatoes, paprika, onion, pumpkin: 15 RMB (1.53 EUR)
  • Total: 59.2 (6.03 EUR)

The total cost of grocery was 6 euro!! And this is usually last for about one week and half or sometimes 2 weeks. Vegetables and other foods looked really healthy and in fact I felt it looked more natural. Because in the big supermarket, most of vegetable skin’s are off (which they probably used chemical thing to remove nicely without any damage and to keep for long time)

People in the market are so friendly and full of life. you could see the real local chinese life. I also felt good that my purchase from them can impact and improve their life while if I buy from big supermarket chain, it ends up dominate the market in the end. (oh don’t get me wrong, I am big fan of big supermarkets but it just that i have fear that one day, i would not have choice but have to go there if this big supermarkets dominate the entire market. )

Anyhow, now I know what I can get with 6 euro in Shanghai. I can save money, and local chinese can earn money gaining loyal customer like me. Then we all are happy :)
