10 places to visit in Shanghai

June 6th, 2012 · No Comments

As summer holiday season is approaching, many of my friends and acquaintances asking me same questions. “I will be in Shanghai coming …, do you have any suggestions?” Here is my answer to you all :)

First of all, I strongly recommend not come to Shanghai during summer as you can seriously suffer by heat. However if it still has to be that way here is my recommendation :)

1. Lujiazui 陆家嘴: All the famous skyscrapers here as this is Financial district in Pudong.  <Metro line 2 Lujiazui station>

If you want to see Shanghai view from the top, Shanghai World Financial center (need to pay entrance) or Jin Mao tower is a good choice. Oriental Pearl tower usually have long line to get in.

2. The Bund (waitan外滩): After seeing huge buildings, cross over the river and enjoy view @ the Bund. Can use either taxi or boat. Also night view is awesome here!

View @ the Bund

3. Nanjing Dong Lu (南京路): from Bund, about 15min of walk you are @ East Nanjing street, where it’s full of people and shopping center. If you are following crowd, it means you are going on right place.

4. Yu Garden (豫園): Gotta check it out if you are interested in Chinese culture, architecture and history. When you get here, first you will be surprised by number of people then by strange smell. (it’s rotten tofu) Make sure get into the garden (where you will need to pay entrance- it’s worth it and much quieter!) <metro line 10 Yu Yuan Garden station>

Antique street

5. Shanghai Dongtai Road Antiques & Animal Street (东台路古玩街): Not so far away from Yu Garden and recommend to take taxi rather than metro. If you purchase anything on antique street, make sure you bargain starting from 10% of what they offer and try not to go over than 30%. I strongly recommend for you to go Animal market, where you will experience bit of real Chinese life.

6. Jing’an Temple (静安寺): if you are in China, course you have to visit at least one temple. Right? <metro line 2 or 7, Jing’an Temple station>

7. Qibao (七寶): mini water town in Shanghai. If you have not much time in Shanghai but really want to see the water town! Then this place will just give you very quick feeling. Water town itself is very small but more famous for Snack Street among Chinese. < metro line 9 Qibao station>

8. Xintiandi (新天地): shopping, bar, cafe and nightlife area where loved by chinese and expat people, since the place has European feeling. <metro line 10 Xintiandi station>

9. Taixang street (泰康路 or also know as Tianzifeng田子坊) : arty street. It became very commercial place now but still interesting place to visit. Will see many of Chinese arts, photographs, crafts and stuff e.t.c. I always get lost here. < metro line 9 Dapuqiao station>

10. Xujiahui (徐家汇): This is shopping heaven for men! Most of computer and related gadget shopping center is concentrated here. <metro line 1 or 9 Xujiahui station>

10 are enough for about 3 days in Shanghai. For more it’s best to buy travel guide books. As Shanghai is fast growing city, I recommend you to buy real updated book.

Useful Tips:

  1. Metro stop running around 10pm.
  2. Even in the summer,  long sleeve shirts are useful as metro and inside of buildings will be cold due to air conditioning. you don’t want to catch a cold during holiday right?
  3. Do not drink water from the tap!!
  4. Try not to go sightseeing during Rush Hour. You will know why…..gheheh
  5. Carry personal tissue, you won’t find any from most of public toilet here
